Imagine...What are your ideas for the 'old' Grammar School

Heanor Grammar School - HGS - is a Grade II listed building - one of only three in Heanor.  But it's not just part of our history - it's part of our future too - because it could provide fantastic facilities for eveyone in the community to use.  It's a beautiful, light and airy building, with fantastic architecture and a gorgeous interior with lovely  oak panels, wooden floors, and a large central hall, with lots of rooms off the corridors which could be used for different things.  Look at the slideshow below to see why it's so important to save it for the future.

We think that using HGS as a start, we could also start to regenerate Heanor into a great town to work, rest and play.  Imagine a walkway from the market place, through HGS, across Ilkeston Road, and into the leisure centre.  The market place could have cafes, shops and stalls to buy presents.  You could chat to your friends as you pass through.  Places like Ilkeston and Belper already have this kind of pedestrian area which people use.  Let's bring Heanor back to life too!

We've done some really good market research and asked over 1,000 people what they'd like to see happen to the building.  The community have said they would like the building to be used for lots of different things.  They have said that they would like to see things like a cinema, a theatre, a place for people to dance - young and old.  We also asked about the shops, and people definitely want to see some change there.

People also want to use it for 'learning' - that's not just courses like you did at school, but things that might help you at work, to get a job, or to help your children with what they're doing at school.  It's helping people to learn something that's useful to them.

There are other things that people want too - a nursery to help families to work - and business units to create jobs in the area - and a place for our young people to go to that will give them something different to do.

We want everyone to enjoy the building - residents of Heanor and Ilkeston, Smalley, Horsley Woodhouse, Horsley, Denby, Langley Mill, Codnor, Loscoe, Cross Hill, Somercotes, and Ilkeston..and anywhere else we've missed off!  So join us!
